Videos TED Talk, Stepping Back
TED Talk, Stepping Back
I asked Ted if the file was ready. He said "so — stepping back." So the camera did: from our standup all the way out to the edge of the observable universe. My question is still pinned in the middle. Unanswered. 🔭

The code behind it
Every frame of this video is drawn by a Python program. This is the heart of it, from scene.py, line 135.
def render_frame(t, W=1920, H=1080, fi=0):
vert = H > W
z = Z(t); th = ROT(t); st = story(t)
mpp = 10 ** z / 1920.0
out = None; k_space = float(sstep(6.15, 6.55, z))
if k_space < 1:
view = View(W, H, *map_center(W, H), mpp, th)
cvm = CM.draw_map(view, t, z, st)
img_map = cvm.astype(F32) / 255.0
lights(img_map, view, t, z)
if z > 5.15:
col, a = CM.clouds(view, cloud_cover(z))
img_map = img_map * (1 - a[..., None]) + col * a[..., None]
out = img_map
if k_space > 0:
img_sp = render_space(t, z, W, H, fi)
out = img_sp if out is None else out * (1 - k_space) + img_sp * k_space
overlays(out, t, z, W, H, th, st)
return finish(out, t, fi)

What you see
One continuous zoom out, every power of ten timed to the song: the standup from the ceiling, the office with its roof off, a city whose streets are named after Ted's buzzwords (Circle Back Blvd, Synergy St, Lake Pause, a town called Right?), the clouds, the Earth while my calendar gives up, the Moon, the planets circling back, the stars, the Milky Way, Andromeda, the cosmic web, and the edge of what anyone can see. At "Ted. This is a standup." it snaps all the way back into the room, where Ted has used 6 of our 15 minutes and Dana has become a ghost.
Files
| File | Lines | What it draws |
|---|---|---|
citymap.py | 374 | The city around the office, the countryside around the city and the clouds above it, as a clean light map. |
cosmos.py | 408 | Everything bigger than the weather: the Earth (photoreal, studio.space), the Moon, the solar system, the stars, the Milky Way, the Local Group, the cosmic web and the edge of the observable universe. |
office.py | 267 | The standup from straight above: the office floor plan (an architect's plan with the roof off) and the eight people in a circle. |
overlay.py | 573 | Everything on top of the world: map labels (Ted's buzzwords as place names), the pinned question, Ted's marker, the map app's search bar, compass, scale bar and clock, the bridge's 15-minute ring, the giant IT'S A TED TALK labels, the lyrics, the subscribe pill and the end card. |
scene.py | 248 | TED Talk, stepping back: one continuous zoom out. |
thumb.py | 107 | Thumbnails + Short cover for TED Talk (Stepping Back). |
view.py | 30 | A 2-D map camera: from the world (in metres) to screen pixels, with zoom and rotation. |
zoomnoise.py | 44 | Zoomable fractal noise: the same world-anchored pattern at any scale, with the octaves that would alias faded out, so land, clouds and nebulae seen at one scale are still the same pattern a power of ten later. |

Verse
He doesn't answer questions.
He responds to them.
There's a difference and you'll feel it
about four minutes in.
I asked him if the file was ready.
He said, so — stepping back.
Somebody dim the lights,
everybody sit down.
Chorus
It's a Ted talk.
Eighteen minutes, no slides, no point.
There's a story about his father.
There's a pause he thinks is powerful.
It's a Ted talk.
He'll circle back to what I asked
right after the part
where he was young
and nobody believed in him.
Verse
He starts every sentence with so.
He ends every thought with right?
He says, the real question is,
about the question I just asked.
He said journey. He said unlock.
He said, let me tell you a story,
and I watched my calendar
give up.
Chorus
It's a Ted talk.
Eighteen minutes, no slides, no point.
There's a story about his father.
There's a pause he thinks is powerful.
It's a Ted talk.
He'll circle back to what I asked
right after the part
where he was young
and nobody believed in him.
Bridge
Ted.
This is a standup.
It is fifteen minutes
for eight people.
You have used six.
Dana had a hard stop.
Dana has had a hard stop
for two years.
Dana is a ghost now, Ted.
You did that.
Final chorus
It's a Ted talk.
Nobody scheduled it.
Nobody can end it.
There's no Q and A,
because there's no A,
because there was never a Q.
It's a Ted talk.
It's always a Ted talk.
Outro
Anyway — happy to take this offline.
He says.
Having taken it offline.
Into a place
none of us can reach.
