Videos Snowflake Undrop

Snowflake Undrop

I ran DROP TABLE on production at 3 a.m. Snowflake didn't lecture me, didn't sulk, didn't bring it up again. It just kept the history long enough for me to type one word: UNDROP. ❄️ A love song to the only relationship where I'm comfortable paying by consumption.

The code behind it

Every frame of this video is drawn by a Python program. This is the heart of it, from scene.py, line 1.

songs/snowflake-undrop/scene.py
"""Snowflake Undrop — reference scene (DROP shatter -> rewind -> data snowflake).
Implementation lives in ud_engine / ud_scene / ud_render; the studio contract is render_frame()."""

What you see

The production table shatters into ice, Time Travel rewinds it, and the rows rebuild themselves into a snowflake.

FileLinesWhat it draws
scene.py3The entry point the pipeline calls: it hands over render_frame() from ud_render.py.

ud_scene.py254Palettes and the timeline: the shatter, the rewind and the rebuild.

Verse

Three a.m. and I was confident, which is my first mistake
Ran DROP TABLE in production, watched the statement seal my fate
Felt my whole career go silent, started packing up my heart
Called my mother, drafted notice, had LinkedIn halfway up
Then I remembered where I was, hands still shaking on the keys
Some databases let you go without a second of reprieve
But you don't panic, you don't blame, you don't make it something strange
You keep history long enough for me to put it back in place

Pre-chorus

And you just sat there, patient, kind
Like nothing irreversible happened tonight
"Check retention, babe
Put the résumé down
Run one command"

Chorus

UNDROP
You gave it back
Everything I swore was gone was waiting in the past
UNDROP
You held the line
No ticket, no escalation, no "per my last email"
Every row, every column
Right where I had left it all
I've known people less forgiving
than a table that I dropped
UNDROP, UNDROP, UNDROP
You gave it back

Verse

Now I clone before I touch it
Look at me, I learned a thing
I can wreck the clone completely
Prod's not even listening
When the warehouse isn't needed
you suspend and stop the spend
Then I send a query, you resume
like you knew I'd call again
No "sorry, just saw this"
No three-business-day delay
No "let's take this offline"
Just the rows rolled back right away

Pre-chorus

Auto-suspend, auto-resume
You don't bill me for the silence
when I'm not in the room

Chorus

UNDROP
Snowflake, you gave it back
Everything I swore was gone was waiting in the past
UNDROP
You held the line
One command between disaster and a very awkward night
Every row, every column
Right where I had left it all
I've known people less forgiving
than a table that I dropped

Bridge

I've read the docs. I took notes.
I highlighted things.
And your documentation
actually says what it means.
One day by default.
Enterprise: permanent objects, up to ninety.
Time Travel lets me revisit the past
without asking why I'm not over it.
And somebody built a command
for the thing you never meant to drop.
Maybe that's what trust is:
not pretending nothing breaks,
just keeping something recoverable
long enough to fix mistakes.
And for you, only you,
I can live with consumption pricing.

Build

You remembered what I dropped
Not forever, just enough
I don't need someone to save me
just a backup I can trust

Final chorus

UNDROP
Snowflake, you gave it back
Everything I thought was gone was waiting in the past
UNDROP
You held the line
Time Travel kept my yesterday, so I could take my time
Every row, every column
every 3 a.m. mistake
You kept history long enough
for me to choose what I could save
UNDROP, say it again
UNDROP, my beautiful friend
I've never loved a platform
for remembering my past
UNDROP, UNDROP, UNDROP
You gave it back

Outro

Snowflake
This may be the healthiest relationship I've had.
